Strategic Plan

Our Updated Vision for the Future Anticipates a New Era for Medical Regulation

In 2023, the FSMB Foundation adopted a new strategic plan that is structured to provide more resources for state medical regulators while anticipating the needs of a fast-changing health care landscape.

As a new and challenging era for medical regulation continues to unfold, the Foundation will launch a variety of initiatives and strategies, partnering closely with the FSMB and collaborating to respond to boards’ evolving operational needs.

The new plan envisions the FSMB Foundation as a catalyst for innovative ideas, encouraging research and education initiatives that translate into best practices and greater effectiveness for state medical boards.

The plan puts an emphasis on helping boards build sustainable leadership for the future, funding programs to help regulatory leaders develop their knowledge and skills and to encourage new thinking.

FSMB Foundation directors and FSMB staff gathered in late 2022 for a strategic planning session at the offices of the North Carolina Medical Board.

Our Vision

To be a catalyst for innovation, helping state medical boards adapt to change and prepare for the future.

Our Mission

We fund and support research and education initiatives that advance best practices in medical regulation and strengthen the safety and quality of health care.

Our Strategic Goals:

1. Research

Fund and support research initiatives that improve the safety of patients and the quality of health care through effective medical regulation.

2. Education

Fund and support education initiatives that improve the safety of patients and the quality of health care through effective medical regulation.

3. Collaboration and Partnership

Build collaborative relationships and partnerships with state medical boards, the FSMB and external organizations that enhance the Foundation’s impact and broaden its reach.

4. Sustainability

Ensure the Foundation’s long-term viability and effectiveness by implementing funding and programmatic activities that are sustainable.

5. Organizational Effectiveness

Implement governance and administrative structures that are fiscally responsible, transparent and adaptable.

To increase the Foundation’s effectiveness, the new plan includes updates to our bylaws, governance and the metrics we use to measure our performance and impact. While we will respond in new ways to the environment faced by the medical regulatory community, the plan continues the Foundation’s historical emphasis on research and education — the two foundational pillars of our mission.
